It’s homework time. Three problems in, and your child is out of the chair, one knee on the seat, foot tapping, pencil spinning between fingers.
The instinct is to call it distraction, or worse, defiance.
Sit down.
Focus.
Stop fidgeting.
But actually, the wiggling might be doing something useful. Researchers who study attention in children have spent years watching this exact scene, and what they keep finding complicates the whole "just sit still" instruction. Movement and focus are not opposites for a developing brain. In many cases, they are partners.
This week, we're digging into the biology behind the squirm: what the body is actually doing when it moves during a hard task, why sitting still is a bigger ask for a developing brain than it looks like from the outside, and what that means for the next homework standoff.

The Brain Under the Wiggle

There's a reason "sit still and pay attention" is one of the most-repeated phrases in any house with a school-age child, and also one of the least effective. A moving body often means a working brain.
Researchers at UC Davis's MIND Institute studied children completing demanding attention tasks and found something that ran against the standard assumption.
Kids who moved more intensely during the task performed better, not worse. The study examined how movement intensity and frequency correlated with accuracy on tasks requiring sustained attention and found that participants who moved more intensely showed substantially better cognitive performance.
The lead researcher's takeaway was direct: the movement wasn't the problem to solve. It may have been raising the child's arousal level in a way that actually supported focus.
A separate line of research out of Florida State's Children's Learning Clinic looked at the same pattern from a different angle, focusing on working memory, the mental scratchpad kids use to hold and rearrange information while they're solving a problem. Researchers found that children often fidget or move when they are trying to solve a problem, and that this movement can positively affect performance.
Fidgeting wasn't a side effect of thinking. It looked more like part of the machinery.
And it isn't only about kids who struggle with attention. A Stanford-led study of sixth- and seventh-graders found that most students came up with more creative ideas when they were allowed to fidget at their desks than when they were told to sit still. Just as notably, letting them move freely in their seats did not diminish their ability to focus or remember information.
The lead author put it simply: most classrooms and living rooms assume movement equals distraction, but the data points elsewhere.
There's also a sensory piece to this that rarely makes it into the conversation. Occupational therapists point to the vestibular system, the sense that tracks balance and where the body is in space, as a quiet driver of attention. Movement activates the vestibular system, supporting participation in tasks and staying focused.
That's the theory behind why a kid who rocks in a chair, bounces a knee, or wraps their legs around the chair legs isn't necessarily checked out. Their nervous system may be reaching for the exact input it needs to stay checked in.

Sitting Still Is a Harder Ask Than It Looks

Here's the part that often gets lost in the frustration of a Tuesday night homework battle: sitting motionless through a task isn’t a neutral, low-effort state for a child. It's an active, effortful one, and the part of the brain doing that work is still under construction.
The prefrontal cortex, the region responsible for planning, impulse control, and holding still against the body's own urges, is one of the last parts of the brain to fully mature.
Researchers who study executive function describe self-regulation, which includes the ability to sit and sustain attention, as a skill that develops gradually across childhood and doesn't fully mature until well into adulthood. Younger children simply have less of this machinery online than an adult evaluating their behavior might assume.
That gap between what's being asked and what the brain can currently deliver shows up directly in classroom research. Teams studying kindergarten readiness have found that sitting still, focusing attention, and not being disruptive remain among the most important self-regulation skills schools expect, even as academic demands on young children have grown.
In other words, the ask hasn't gotten easier even as it's been layered on top of more academic pressure.
None of this means a child gets a pass on effort or follow-through. It means the working definition of "should be easy" needs an update.
A ten-year-old who can't stay glued to a chair for forty-five straight minutes isn't behind or defiant. They're a kid whose self-regulation system, the same one responsible for staying still, waiting their turn, and managing frustration, is still being built.
In that light, movement isn't a workaround. It's often the tool a still-developing brain reaches for to do the job it's being asked to do.

What to Actually Do With the Wiggle

Reframing the squirm as biology instead of behavior is useful, but it's not the whole job. Parents still need to get through actual homework, actual dinner-table stillness, actual quiet time in the car. The research offers a few concrete, low-effort shifts worth trying.
Start with permission before correction. Before assuming a fidgeting child has checked out, consider that the movement might be what keeps them checked in. A rocking chair, a wobble cushion, or simply permission to stand at the counter instead of sitting at the table costs nothing and removes a fight that doesn't need to happen.
Build movement into the task, not just around it. Classroom-based research backs this up directly. A study of elementary students found that adding short, active movement breaks during the school day led to significant increases in on-task behavior, and that students in the movement group were measurably more active throughout the rest of the day too.
That same logic scales down to a kitchen table. A two-minute stretch or a lap around the living room between worksheet pages isn't a distraction from the work. It's often what makes the next stretch of work possible.
Match the type of movement to the moment. Fast, intense movement (jumping jacks, a quick dance break) often works well right before a task that needs alertness. Rhythmic, steady movement (rocking, bouncing on a therapy ball, pacing) tends to support sustained focus during the task itself. There's no single right answer here, only a child's own signal, which is worth watching for rather than overriding.
Save the word "distraction" for when it's actually true. Not every fidget serves attention. If movement is escalating instead of settling, if it's paired with clear avoidance of the task rather than engagement with it, that's a different conversation and a fair moment to redirect.
The shift isn't permissiveness. It's accuracy: matching the response to what's actually happening in the child's body, not just what it looks like from across the room.
